A quick overview of the project
In the Mediterranean region, deciduous oak forests play an important role in wood production, hydrological balance of watersheds, biodiversity and soil conservation, carbon sequestration. They also contribute to the beauty of the landscape.
For some time now, deciduous oak forests have been showing symptoms of decline: reduction in growth and vigor, premature leaf drop, crown dieback, increased susceptibility to parasites, tree mortality.
Climate change and associated droughts are currently considered an important cause of the decline of Mediterranean oak forests. Other factors such as overgrazing and soil compaction may also contribute.
Forest management and silviculture can plan actions at different spatial and temporal scales to maintain forest ecosystem functionality and improve the resilience of Mediterranean oak forests to climate change.
